Efren Geronimo Penaflorida Junior

“You are the change that you dream”
Efren Geronimo Penaflorida Junior is a teacher and social worker in the Philippines. In 2000 he graduated from San Sebastian College with a computer technology degree, with the highest honors. He is the founder of Dynamic Teen Company, which is geared towards averting teen boys from being the victims of gangs and drugs, to education. As a result of his hard work towards charity, he was nominated for the CNN heroes in 2009 and won first place among the top ten CNN Heroes nominees.

Efren Penaflorida grew up near an urban slum in Cavity City in Philippines; where the children play near the city’s open dumpster and polluted water. At this early age was among thousands of World Vision’s sponsored children. Later, a youth group called Club 8586 helped him financially to complete elementary and high school.

In 1997 at age 16, he started a youth group within his high school by gathering 20 student members, aiming to divert the attention of young teens that are vulnerable to gangs and drugs by turning their attention to books, studies, and other activities; and later named their organization Dynamic Teen Company. He provides kids in the slum with all the utensils that their families can’t afford, such as pens, pencils, books and other school supplies.


Now, he works as a teacher at a private school to support his family and does volunteer work on the side. He and his members bring push cart with books every Saturday bringing the class room to the slum and getting kids to read and write. He works with Club 8586 and other various charity organizations in the region to help teens and young children to build their lives with a solid foundation.
Efren says his dream is to build a school to for these children.

Anuradha Koirala

"One day we will really stop it, the trafficking will end."

Anuradha Koirala has deicated most of her life to helping former sex-slave victims that had been trafficked illegally from her native country, Nepal, to India to work in the brothels.


She is the director of MaitiNepal. A non-profit organization that offers rehabilitation to these girls that had experienced unbelievable horrors. The women can stay in the homes run by Maiti Nepal until they are able to return to their homes. 

Some women aren't accepted back by their parents, however Maiti Nepal will support the women until they become able to live on their own.

Maiti Nepal also works with police and authorities to patrolling the Nepali-Indian border, rescuing trafficked women from the brothels in India, and reunited women with lost relitatives.

She won the CNN Heroes for the year 2010.

The United States government has given a two-year grant of $500,000 to Maiti Nepal.

Narayanan Krishnan

Krishnan "See the joy of giving"




Narayanan Krishnan was a young culinary arts graduate. He was working in a Taj Group of Hotels in Bangalore right after his graduation. In 2002, he went to Madurai, Tamil Nadu to visit his family and friends before he headed to Switcher Land where he was hired for an elite job and what he will see in Madurai will have changed everything.

When Krishnan was in Madurai by a temple he saw an old man eating his own human waste under a bridge, this changed Krishnans' life on what he will do from here on. Here the young chef wandered of the purpose of his life and has decided to quit his job and feed the hungry homeless and poor people of his home town Madurai.

In 2002, at age 21 Krishnan started Akshaya Trust which is a nonprofit organization to help the abandoned elderly and homeless. Krishnan wakes up every morning at 4:00 am and prepares breakfast and drive 200 km with his team on a donated mini van feeding destitute throughout the city of Madurai; he also provides lunch and dinner. This routine remains unchanged till this day.


This 29 years old chef generally feet up to 400 mentally ill destitutes and people who cannot take care of themselves with his hands each day. He provides haircut, shave and bath to those who are mentally affected and homeless. He says that by feeding and cleaning them physically, will phychologically create love, feel strong, and build new hope in them, and this will enable them to rebuild their lives.
He believes that the ultimate purpose of life is to give.

Krishnan is currently in the process of building 24,500 sq. feet home for neglected people in distress and he still needs Rs. 160 Lakhs (India) to complete this project and to carry on with his operation.

Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow

"Every small act of kindness does make a difference."


One day in 1992, while enjoying a pint in the beautiful scottish highlands with his brother. Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow came up with an idea that would change not only his life, but would also be the first step in changing the lives of many. That day in the pub while watching a news report about the refugee camps in Bosnia and seeing the images of the people suffering. He said to his brother "wouldn't it be wonderful if we can just do one thing to help." He gave up his job and sold his house and travelled down to Bosnia in order to help the people in this war-torn contry. Him and his brother collected clothes, medicine, food and blankets and hed down to Bosnia.


Since then the built a program called Mary's Meals, which today provides more than 400 000 meals to people daily around the world. Albania, Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ukraine, Malawi, Uganda, Sudan, Kenya, Liberia, Zambia, Haiti, India, Bangladesh, Philippines, Burma and Thailand.


He said that through his life and what hes accomplished with Mary's meals that it was just a series of little acts of love. He says that he's learned that "Every small act of kindness does make a difference."
